Our History

A proud tradition. A clear path. A community on the rise.

The Lehigh Valley Phantoms Youth program carries forward more than four decades of local hockey tradition, representing generations of players, families, and community leaders who helped shape the sport in the Greater Lehigh Valley.

Our story begins in 1975, when the Lehigh Valley Comets first took the ice at the Ice Palace on Hanover Avenue in Allentown. The Comets built a strong reputation for player development, competitive excellence, and community spirit—values that remain central to our organization today.

In 2003, the opening of the Bethlehem Flyers Skate Zone (now Steel Ice Center) led to the formation of the Bethlehem Blast. The Blast quickly emerged as a force in the Delaware Valley Hockey League (DVHL), developing top talent and fostering a passionate hockey community in South Bethlehem.

By the late 2000s, conversations began between the leadership of the Comets and Blast about uniting the region’s hockey programs. In 2011, this vision became reality as the organizations merged to form the Lehigh Valley Flames—bringing together their shared legacy of coaching excellence, player success, and community pride.

From the Flames’ inaugural season in 2011 — the first chapter of a unified program built on the shared legacy of the Comets and Blast.

In 2014, with the arrival of the Lehigh Valley Phantoms (AHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers), the organization proudly aligned with the region’s professional team—rebranding as the Lehigh Valley Phantoms Youth.

Today, Phantoms Youth continues to honor its roots while building for the future:

From the Ice Palace to Steel Ice Center, from the Comets and Blast to the Flames and Phantoms Youth—our history is one of resilience, growth, and a shared love of the game. We are proud to carry that tradition forward, and excited to see where the next generation of players will take us.

We carry forward not just the legacy of our founding programs, but also the memory of those who’ve shaped our community in profound ways — including players like Gus Schwartz.
